Biography
Considered the new global face of classical guitar, Raphaël Feuillâtre fascinates the public and critics with the depth of his interpretations, his dazzling virtuosity and the richness of his repertoire.
First prize in the prestigious competition of the Guitar Foundation of America (USA - 2018) and “Classical Revelation 2021” of ADAMI, Raphaël is chosen as an exclusive artist by the Deutsche Grammophon label in 2022 and is, to date, one very rare guitarists to have joined this legendary label. From this fruitful collaboration was born a first single entitled “Les Barricades Mystérieuses”, then his first album “Visages Baroques” in 2023. Raphaël reveals different sides of the baroque aesthetic with a program centered on the figures of Johann Sebastian Bach and Jean -Philippe Rameau.
After a notable debut at Carnegie Hall in New York in spring 2023, he will perform in the most prestigious halls and festivals around the world - such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the “Folle journe” in Nantes or the Beethoven Haus in Bonn - as well as in major events in the guitar world such as the Paris International Guitar Festival, the Guitarras del Mundo Festival in Argentina, the Changsha International Guitar Festival in China, etc.
Her passion for chamber music and the desire to carry her instrument in these practices lead her to collaborate with musicians of the highest order: the recorder Lucie Horsch, the trumpeter Lucienne Renaudin Vary and even the violinist Maria Dueñas, at events such as Deutsche Grammophon's Yellow Lounge, the Dresden Music Festival or the Società del Quartetto Di Milano – Sala G. Verdi.
Born in 1996 in Djibouti, Raphaël was introduced to the guitar by his first teacher Hacène Addadi in Cholet before joining Michel Grizard's class at the Nantes Conservatory in 2012. Three years later, he joined the National Conservatory of Music and Dance of Paris in the classes of Roland Dyens then Tristan Manoukian. During this period, he was accompanied by Judicaël Perroy who played an essential role in his artistic development.
In addition to the first prize obtained at the GFA, Raphaël has built a great reputation in the world of classical guitar by distinguishing himself in the following competitions: the Jose Tomas International Guitar Competition in Villa Petrer (Spain - 2017), the Kutna Hora International Guitar Festival (Czech Republic - 2017), the Viseu International Spring Music Festival (Portugal - 2016), the Fontenay-sous-Bois Guitar Competition & Festival (France - 2015) or even the Ciudad de Coria International Guitar Festival (Spain - 2014).
Ambassador of the guitar and keen to participate in the development of his repertoire, he requested the arrangement of numerous works from the repertoire of the instruments he likes - with a particular predilection for keyboard instruments such as the piano or the harpsichord - this attraction particularly reflected in the choice of programs that it brings to the disc.
Driven by a deep desire to transmit his passion for music and the instrument, Raphaël teaches at the “Pont Supérieur - Bretagne” and is co-founder of the Lille Guitar Academy, a summer academy for guitarists. Students from all over the world receive his advice during masterclasses given at the San Francisco Conservatory, the Manhattan School in New York, the Haute École de Musique in Geneva, etc. In addition, he is involved in artistic awareness projects, particularly since a tour of the USA during which he participated in numerous interventions in schools and prisons.
Raphaël Feuillâtre is supported by Savarez, a historic string manufacturing company founded in 1770, and plays a guitar by Australian luthier Greg Smallman.
